A mala is a string of prayer beads, traditionally used for meditation, mantras, and breathwork. But here at Root & Ritual, it's more than that — it’s a talisman, a tool, a piece of soul medicine. Whether you use it for spiritual practice or simply wear it as a daily reminder of your intention, your mala is yours to define.

There’s no one right way. Here are a few of the most common:

• Mantra meditation: Hold each bead between your fingers and repeat a mantra, one bead at a time. You’ll often recite it 108 times — the number of beads in a traditional mala.
  
  
• Breathwork: Inhale and exhale slowly with each bead to anchor yourself in the moment.
  
  

Intention setting: Wear your mala as a daily reminder of your focus or affirmation.

Your mala is sensitive to energy — just like you. You can cleanse it any time it feels heavy, unclear, or after someone else has handled it.

Try one of the following:

• Moonlight: Lay it under the full moon overnight
  
  
• Smoke: Gently pass it through incense, sage, or palo santo
  
  
• Sound: Use a singing bowl, chime, or tuning fork
  
  
• Crystals: Rest it on selenite, amethyst, or clear quartz
  
  

You don’t have to do it all — just follow what feels right.

• Find a quiet moment to hold it in your hands
  
  
• Take a few deep breaths and feel its weight, its energy
  
  
• Speak or silently set an intention (a feeling, a word, a prayer)
  
  
• Wear it for a few days in a row to bond your energy together
  
  

Your mala is like a new friend — give it time to know you. You’ll find your rhythm together.

If someone else handles it, just give it a gentle cleanse and set your intention again. Think of it like resetting the energy. Trust your intuition — it will guide you.

• Avoid getting it wet — water, lotions, perfume, and sweat can weaken the cord or affect some stones
  
  
• Remove it before sleep or strenuous activity
